First Wedding Show for Posh Veils

Posh Veils has been accepted to exhibit at the Wed By Hand wedding show in Ottawa February 2011. I’m excited about my very first wedding show exhibition. The philosophy behind the wedding show is pretty awesome. All products showcased are designed and created by hand. I think I’ll fit right in. Working with my hands is what I do best!
I will be posting more on about the show as time draws closer. Now I have to work, work, and work. I have a couple of things to do. January and February are going to be busy months for me.
  • Finalize sketches and fabric choices for the upcoming collection.
  • Complete and launch the Spring 2011 Posh Veils collection
  • Co-ordinate models, photographer, and location for the new line photo shoot.
  • Work on my wedding show table set up.
  • Get to Ottawa and back with a 2 month old baby.
It’s going to be exciting! Breathe in and out, in and out.

If Only I Could Get Married Everyday

I must be totally insane for wanting to get married over and over again only for the sole purpose of wearing a gorgeous gown.  Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Rosa Clara, Kenneth Pool, Carolina Herrera, and Rivini don't make it easy for us day dreamers. *Sigh*

I absolutely love the wedding dresses you can find nowadays. I mean talk about the the details, asymmetrical lines and shapes, the yummy colors, the mix and match of luxurious fabrics...hmm...they're just to die for.

For the bride that can afford it, I say go Vera Wang. or Monique Lhuillier. They are my absolute favourite wedding gown designers!

Can we wear wedding gowns everyday? They're just too beautiful for just one day!

Sorry For The Light Posts

I'm sorry for the light post last week you guys. I've been keeping busy with deadlines and stuff. Lots of things have been happening...a South African wedding magazine is interested in featuring our wedding in their September issue, so I've been working on a Q & A interview with them.  Then tomorrow, I have a lunch meeting with the stylists from the Canadian based wedding magazine interested in featuring Posh Veils pieces in the Spring/Summer 2011 issue. I still have two pieces to work on and finish tonight, so right after work I have to run to the fabric shop because I ran out of pink tulle...argghhh. I would have done it yesterday but I decided to take a drive with B. to Niagara-On-The-Lake instead... that's a SAG (Sagittarian) for you! Talking about the drive to Niagara, I had to pee like every 30 minutes...being 20 weeks pregnant I thought that the second trimester would be easier...boy was I wrong!  B. says I failed the test to measure my endurance for an  8 hour trip to New York in the fall...lol.  I guess I ain't going then.

I promise to have things back to normal the day after tomorrow :)

Mwah!!

The First Time I wore Make-up

I remember the first time I wore make-up. I was 16. A close high-school friend of mine had a powder compact she would sneak into school. We went into the girls washroom and put on the "amazing powder". After applying it for the first time I thought it made me look beautiful; different. So each day, as soon as the end of day school bell rang, we would rush to the girls’ washroom and powder our faces for the trip back home. We were so new to the make-up thing that we didn’t know that the color of the powder had to match the user’s skin tone. I think it’s vital for me to mention at this point that my friend’s skin tone was two shades lighter than mine…and, we used the same shade! So, hurriedly (because we wanted to catch the school boys also making their way home), we would put on our make-up, which only consisted of a compact powder and Vaseline for the lips. A few minutes later, after combing our hair in place (the finishing touch), there we were, two giddy 16 year olds with no sense of how uneven our skin tone probably looked. We had to look great for the trip home after school you see; actually, one had to look better for that trip than any other trip in their life as a high school student (so we thought). Anyway, back to the story, so my friend and I would walk through the uptown Harare streets to the taxi ranks all dolled up (but not without a couple of detours to the Ximex mall (pronounced Zi-mex) ). It was against school rules to be found “loitering” in the uptown shops and malls. It was exciting; the rush of an impending apprehension by eager school prefects... wow!! There’s nothing like it.

I guess it’s obvious to you now that my early experiences with make-up had little to do with aesthetic reasoning and more to do with adventure and experimentation. We thought we were fabulous. The idea that we girls had powder on our faces regardless of whether the tone was off or whether we wore too much of it didn’t faze us. I would not like to see a picture of myself back then…well… maybe only to get a good laugh. I’ve learnt so much more about make-up over the years since then. I’ve had so much help from my make-up artist friend Sibahle.  Today some of you reading this right now may feel like the 16 year old version of me. There are so many resources now about what make up works for you and what best suits you, whether for daily wear or only for special occasions. I think make-up is about liberation: the choices, what colour/s to wear, how to wear it, when you wear it. I love make-up! There are some women that will make you feel small for wearing make-up. I’m not going to say anything else about those women.

In closing, what has stayed with me from the moment I first powdered my face at 16 is the good feeling; the confidence you get when you wear make-up, whether it’s just lip-gloss or mascara. At 16 when I looked in the mirror after powdering my face, I thought I looked beautiful. And you know what’s most important about that regardless of the fact that the shade of powder was off…I THOUGHT OF MYSELF AS BEAUTIFUL. The opinion you have of yourself matters more than that of another!

Introduction

Hi ya!
Well, I've been working hard for the past 6 months, drawing, erasing, fabric sampling, vintage shop prowling, and sewing as fast as my fingers can to get my first collection of POSH VEILS out. I'm excited and exhausted. I can't wait for all the brides out there to discover and fall in love with the pieces. (Is it bad that I'm in love with every single piece? *swoon*).

I love what I do and I hope that you all do too. If you haven't been on the site already, check it out!
